Understanding MIL-STD Compliance for Power Supplies: What You Need to Know

What are MIL-STDs?

Military standards, or MIL-STDs, are specifications overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and developed in collaboration with industry, defense contractors, and technical organizations. These standards define key performance, durability, and safety requirements for military equipment, ensuring reliability and interoperability across defense systems.

For engineers working on power supplies, MIL-STDs dictate how products should perform in extreme environments, where factors like shock, vibration, EMI, and environmental conditions could otherwise impact function. Compliance with these standards is essential to ensuring the longevity and reliability of power supplies and the military systems they support.

Which MIL-STDs Matter Most to Us?

In designing power supplies for defense applications, several MIL-STDs are particularly critical:

MIL-STD-704: Applies to aircraft power systems, specifying requirements for 115V AC, 28V DC, and 270V DC inputs. Compliance ensures that power supplies can handle the demanding electrical conditions found in military aviation, including high-altitude operation, extreme humidity, and fluctuating voltage environments. MIL-STD-1275: Defines the power characteristics for 28V DC input on military ground vehicles, ensuring power supplies can withstand voltage spikes, transients, and harsh operating conditions. While primarily applied to ground vehicles, its principles also extend to some shipboard, airborne, and auxiliary power systems with 28V DC architecture. MIL-STD-1399: Addresses the power characteristics and compatibility for shipboard systems, including requirements for power quality, system interaction and voltage spikes. Compliance ensures that power supplies are compatible with naval platforms. Many of Rantec’s power supplies designed for shipboard systems are designed to meet customer requirements in this MIL-STD.

MIL-STD-461: Establishes limits on electromagnetic emissions and sets requirements for susceptibility to external EMI. This ensures that power supplies do not interfere with other critical military systems and can function in high-EMI environments. MIL-STD-810: This environmental standard covers conditions like temperature extremes, shock, vibration, altitude and humidity. MIL-HDBK-454: Outlines general requirements for the safety and reliability of electronic military equipment. What Are the Biggest Challenges in Designing to These Standards?

            1.         Prime Power and Transients: Standards like MIL-STD-1275 (ground vehicles) and MIL-STD-704 (aircraft power systems) require power supplies to handle voltage transients, power fluctuations, and spikes.
